Simple Spring Crafts for Kids

Spring is in the air and the birds are chirping. I love it! As a result, we have been busy creating little spring chicks. So far we have made paper chicks for cutting practice, and simple tape and feather Easter chicks. Ready for another simple chick craft? Following the basic idea of our Paper Strip Christmas Trees, we made adorable little chicks.

Cone Chick materials:

Yellow Paper ~ to make the cone shape
Tape and Glue
Yellow Paper Strips
Jewels ~ optional
Goggly eyes
Orange diamond for the beak

Just to make things easier, I taped the cones together ahead of time.

Really there is nothing too it. Just hand the kids a bunch of paper strips, jewels, and a glue bottle.

I love how they turned out! Super simple, but so adorable!

This would be another great project for using our simple Glue Sponges. We made an adorable paper plate hedgehog using a paper strips and a glue sponge. Either method works great!

This one reminds me of a little floppy eared bunny;) Love it!

Jewels are always a great addition to any craft. The kids always giggle and cheer when I bring them out. You can buy ones that are already sticky, but these ones need to be applied with glue.

Preschool Counting Activities ~ Counting Carrots

Spring is in the air and I can’t wait to start digging in the garden. Which is where the inspiration for our preschool counting activities came from. Recently we made adorable paper plate carrots, and handprint carrots. We are now adding simple counting carrots to our list.

Ready for one of the simplest material lists yet?

Counting Carrot Materials:

Brown, Green and orange construction paper
Scissors
Glue

Encourage your kids to cut 5 orange triangles. These will become your carrots.

Write the numbers 1-5 and have the kids glue the carrots in numerical order.

They then cut 15 green paper strips, for the carrot tops.

Finally, they glued the number of green strips that correspond to the number on the carrot.

Simple counting activity that is perfect for woking on number recognition and scissor skills.

How to Regrow Lettuce

How to Grow Food from Scraps ~ Regrow Lettuce

I am always amazed that you can actually regrow food from the scraps that I would normally toss to the chickens. We have been Regrowing Celery for a couple of years now, but this is our first time trying to regrow lettuce. It worked like a charm, and was so easy to do. Read on to find out how to get a kick start on your gardening and regrow your own lettuce.

How to Regrow Lettuce:

Romaine Lettuce
Shallow Dish
Water
Rocks ~ to stabilize the lettuce
Sunny window

Sustainable Food Scraps ~ gardening with kids

Simply chop the base of the romaine lettuce, leaving about 2 inches. This is the piece that you would normally compost or feed to the chickens. Place the base in a dish of water in a sunny location. You may need to add a few rocks to stabilize it. Thats all you need to do. I know it sounds too good to be true, right? I was surprised too.

You should start noticing changes pretty quickly. The photos were taken at about 2 weeks after we started our little lettuce plants.

You should soon start seeing little roots forming. Once you see these, you are good to plant into soil. We chose to plant ours in little containers right by our back door, but they could go straight into the garden as well.

So much easier and quicker than starting from seed. Plus it is a great science experiment for kids.

My kids spend hours creating simple origami creations. I started searching for some simple Easter origami ideas for them to create. String Art Easter cross

DIY Easter Cross ~ Simple string art for kids

Looking for a simple woodworking project that your kids can make for Easter? I am in love with this simple project, and the kids had so much fun learning new skills. This little String Art Easter Cross could not be simpler to create. Read on to see how we did it.

I am thrilled to be a part of a new art series all about exploring easy art projects for kids. So far we have explored watercolors and ways to create resist art. This week we are focusing on creating and playing with string (I’ve included links to all the participating blogs at the end of this post).

Hammers and kids may seem intimidating. However, it does not have to be. I help do this project with around 50 kids ranging in age from 3 right up to 11. Each of the kids did an amazing job with their project and were so proud of what they created.

String Easter Cross Materials:

3/4″ rough cut Cedar board ~ We used 1 x 6 cedar fence pickets and cut the boards into 9″ pieces. Each of our finished cross boards were approx. 5″ x 9″
Embroidery string
Small finish nails/trim nails
Hammer
Printed Cross template ~ optional

To make things easier for our large group, we had the kids tape a cross template to their board. This served as a guide for their nails, although you could have them trace the template as well.

They hammered the nails along the outline of the template. Once all the nails were secure, they tore off the template. Make sure that the nails are pounded in far enough that they don’t wiggle. A few of the younger kiddos needed help with this step. The nails will need to be secure enough to wrap with yarn.

To start the project, the kids tied a double knot in their embroidery floss. They then wrapped the embroidery floss around the nails, going with the shape of the cross. It worked best to keep string taunt as they wrapped the nails.

The colors are not showing up here very well. However, most of the kids used multiple colors of floss. I love that each cross is different and has a unique pattern.

Now I just need to get my set hung before Easter.

We have made a few cross crafts over the years and they are always a hit at easter. A few of my favorites include our simple egg carton cross, melted crayon cross and our light ray cross. Each of them would make a wonderful gift for a grandparent or a special friend.
