Healthy Dehydrated Fruit

My kids love Healthy Dehydrated Fruit Snacks.  They are easy to make and the perfect quick healthy snack for kids.  You can buy dried fruit in the store, but my kids prefer our dehydrator snacks.  My favorite part it that I know exactly what the kids are eating, I don’t have to read any labels.  They also love taking healthy homemade Fruit Roll-ups in their school lunches.

We have experimented with dehydrating lots of different fruits.  However the kids favorites include kiwis, apples, strawberries, bananas and peaches. We have a 10 Tray Food Dehydratorand absolutely love it!  I have tried a few different dehydrators  but so far this is our favorite.

Healthy Dehydrated Fruit

Dehydrated Strawberries:

Wash the fruit and remove the steams.  Use an egg slicer to make thin slices and simply lay them on the dehydrator trays.  No lemon juice or sugar needed. Dehydrated strawberries are great by themselves or they make a perfect topper for granola.

Dehydrated Kiwi:

Wash the kiwi and peel off the skin. Using a mandolin or knife, make thin even slices.  Arrange slices on dehydrator trays.  Again no special treatment, just ripe tasty fruit!  My kids think that they taste just like sour patch kids!  Love it!

Dehydrated Apples:

Wash your apples and run them through an apple-corer-peeler-slicer (if you don’t have one, then simple peel by hand, core and slice by hand).  Our family loves the tartness of granny smith apples.  Soak the apples in lemon juice to prevent them from browning.

We also enjoy…

  • Sweet Cinnamon Apple Slices ~  Place apple slices in 1/2 cup lemon juice and 1 tablespoon of agave nectar or honey.  Arrange the slices on the dehydrator trays and sprinkle with a dash of cinnamon.
  • Cinnamon Sugar Apple Slices ~  Place apple slices in lemon juice and arrange on dehydrator trays.  Sprinkle with cinnamon sugar.

Dehydrated Bananas:

Peel the banana and cut into thick slices.  I usually get about 18-20 slices out of each banana.  Soak bananas in 1/2 cup lemon juice and 1 Tablespoon of agave nectar or honey.  Arrange slices on the dehydrator trays.  These will not be crisp like the ones in the store, but they taste SO much better.

Dehydrated Oranges:

Peel oranges and thinly slice with a Mandoline or knife.  Arrange slices on dehydrator trays.  You may be surprised by how delightful dehydrated oranges taste.  They also make great Christmas decorations.

Drying time will depend on how thick you slice your fruit and if you have added agave nectar or honey.  Generally most fruit will take up to 8 hours.  I often start my dehydrator in the evening and let it run all night.  The fruit is dry when you cut it open and there is no moisture inside.  Remove the fruit from the tray and let cool before storing.  I store my dried fruit in glass mason jars.  It is best to buy fruit at its peak season and make sure to only use ripe fruit.

These healthy dehydrated snacks are perfect for camping, going to the beach, long car rides, throwing in your purse, on top of granola and just about anywhere else.  I love that there are no messy, drippy, sticky fingers or faces to wash and that my kids are snacking on healthy treats with no preservatives.

Healthy dehydrated Fruit Leather

Here is another great dehydrator recipe.  My kids also LOVE this healthy fruit leather in their lunches.  It is 100% fruit, nothing extra added which I’m all for and the kids love that  it tastes great!

Build Your Own Sprinkler

Our summer has not been super warm yet, but the kiddos don’t seem to mind.  They have been splashing in the pool and loving being at the lake.  Today they really wanted to run through the sprinkler, but when we pulled it out it was broken.  Boo!  I have seen some wonderful sprinklers made out of PVC pipe on Pinterest that I would love to make with the kids.  However, we needed a quick simple option for today.  With a few simple steps, you can Build Your Own Sprinkler too.

Homemade Sprinkler ~ Recycled Materials

Materials:

  • Sturdy Plastic Bottle ~ from our recycling bin
  • Tyvek Tape
  • Drill
  • Garden Hose that you can tape to.

Homemade Sprinkler ~ Recycled Materials We attached the garden hose to the bottle with Tyvek tape.  I’m sure most any waterproof tape would work.  Then the kids drilled a number of holes in the top and sides of the bottle.  Depending on how you want your sprinkler to shoot, will depend on where you place the holes.  The kids wanted water spurting everywhere so choose to drill holes in all directions.

It was so simple to make.  I love that Kaleb is so great with power tools.  He spends a lot of time helping his Dad build and was super excited to show Chuck what he created.  So cute!

Homemade Sprinkler ~ Made with Recycled Materials

The kids sprinkler worked great! My favorite part is that we didn’t need to spend money on a new one and the kids had the fun of creating their own.  I was surprised at how easy it was and that it only took the kids a few minutes to build.

The kids loved running and playing in it.

Father’s Day

The kiddos were wanting a project to work on.  They love working with recycled material and the glue gun. Father’s Day seemed like the perfect time for them to get creative.  They could not wait to make something special for Chuck.  After some creative suggestions (which made me giggle!) they decided to make a hammer since Chuck is a contractor.  So cute.

The kids got to work using cereal boxes, a glue gun, milk jug lids and acrylic paint.  I wish I would have taken pictures throughout the process, but I was too busy sewing:)  I helped gather all the materials and walked into another room.  I find that sometimes leaving the room helps the kids not rely on my help.  The results are often far better than what I could have helped them come up with.

These little hammers are SO cute.  I love the string the kids added to hang on a carpenters belt.  Perfect!

The kids insisted that Chuck try it out.  It was not quite strong enough for hammering into wood, but worked great for hammering into cardboard.  Love it!

Hope everyone had a special Father’s Day.  The kids are now waiting for Kid Day.  Hmmmm…I might have to plan a special day just for them.

Summer 2011 Bucket List

I love all the fun summer bucket lists that are popping up everywhere.  Summer always escapes too quickly.  Before I know it my kiddos are back in school and I am left wondering where the time went.  This is a great way to help organize all the fun things we want to do.  Love it!

This would have turned out SO cute written in “little kid font”, although none of the kids wanted to write it.  Instead I pulled out my favorite pens to doodle with and got to work.  Where would I be without my colored sharpies?  We all sat down and the kids listed all the things that they wanted to do this summer before school started again.  I love all their ideas.  Now it is just figuring out how to fit is all in!

We hung by our front door to reminded us what fun adventures are still waiting to be done this summer.  As we complete an activity we will cross it off on the glass.  This way the kids can check off the list and after summer is over the list can be filled away.  I would love to hear what you are looking forward to doing this summer.

Sandbox Visitors

Last summer Chuck built the kids a wonderful covered sandbox.  It is tucked in the corner of the kids play area.  I love watching them build tunnels and make wonderful creations.  Today however, there was a different type of play happening.  As I come around the corner I hear a quiet “shhh…here comes mom” and quickly they closed the sandbox lid.  Suspicious!  So I call the kiddos over to see what they are up to.  They all start talking at once “We like them mom!”  “They are just babies!” “They are so cute!”  “They are fuzzy!”  Now I am really curious what they are hiding in the sandbox since our only pets are fish.

The kids stood on the lid of the sandbox guarding their new found playmates.  Eventually they decided to let us see what all the fuss was about.  I probably should have asked more questions, because this was my reaction.  I am surprised that Chuck was able to even get a picture since I was running away so fast!

Yes, I totally freaked out!  But do you really blame me?  Apparently the kids have not played in the sandbox in a while because they found a nest of 5 baby mice.  I really have no words!  Chuck took pictures, while I was observing from a distance.

I am all for learning through discovery.  However, really it is a baby mouse.  Do they not realize that these cute cuddly little guys they are holding could one day be the same little creature that has me standing on the couch waiting for Chuck to come rescue me?

Chuck let the kids enjoy the little creatures for a bit.  Then had the kiddos place them back in the nest.  I am not sure what the mama mouse will think when she returns to her disrupted home.  The kids were then sent inside to wash up.  I am still shaking, but the kids thought this was the best discovery EVER!  Kaleb even mentioned that next to his planed trip to Valley Fair this is the highlight of his summer.  Ha!  Hopefully our summer will hold more exciting learning adventures; ones that I can enjoy with them as well!
