Stained Glass Shamrock Supplies:

  • Cardboard Template from the Glitter Shamrocks (click on the red link to see how to make a template)
  • Black tempera paint
  • Large Coffee Filter
  • Green and Yellow Liquid Water Colors
  • Pipette (infant medication droppers work great too)

Have your kiddos paint the template black, creating a silhouette.  We chose to cut our template into a circle, but no need to.  You could also use black paper and skip with step:)  Set the silhouette aside to dry. Stained Glass Shamrock ~ St. Patrick's Day Sun Catcher

Fine Motor Practice

Place your coffee filter onto a shallow tray to help contain the mess (a Styrofoam meat tray works great).  Use the Medicine dropper or pipette to squeeze up the liquid watercolor and then squirt it onto the coffee filter.  This is a great fine motor exercise for toddlers.  It take concentration and coordination to squeeze up the liquid and then squirt it back out.  For another coffee filter variation, check out our Monster Marker prints.

The kids enjoyed watching the colors pool and mix.  This is a great way to see color mixing.  The colors blend together right on the coffee filter, creating a new color.

Once everything is dry, glue the colorful filter onto the backside of the cardboard.  We just used a glue stick, and it worked great.

Glitter Shamrock

Glitter Shamrock Sun Catcher

St. Patrick’s Day is right around the corner, and the perfect time to make these adorable Glitter Shamrocks.  These little shamrock sun-catchers are perfect for adding a little sparkle to your window.

Glitter Shamrock Sun-catchers ~ Easy St Patricks day craft for Toddlers

Glitter Shamrock supplies:

  • Cereal Box or similar cardboard
  • White Glue
  • Glitter (we used green and silver)
  • Wax Paper
  • Craft Knift

Glitter Shamrock Sun-catchers ~ Easy St Patricks day craft for ToddlersDraw a simple shamrock shape onto the center of the cereal box.  If you don’t feel comfortable drawing your own, you can print one off the internet and trace it.

Once you have the shamrock drawn, use an craft knife to cut out the silhouette.  Try to cut out your shamrock carefully.  We used the same shamrock cut out to make our Stained Glass Shamrocks sun catchers.

Tape a piece of wax paper to your work surface (we used a craft tray).  Also tape the cardboard onto the wax paper to create a mask for the glue.

Squeeze glue all over the shamrock cut out.  Encouraged the kids to keep the glue bottle moving as they squeezed.  Although there is really no wrong way to go about it.

Remove the cardboard cutout before handing over the glitter bottle.  Since I am using our cardboard cut out for another craft soon, I wiped some of the excess glue from ours. Glitter Shamrock Sun-catchers ~ Easy St Patricks day craft for Toddlers

The kids loved shaking glitter all over their shamrock.  I love these little  glitter shakers from CraftProjectIdeas.com.  They are easy for little ones to hold and they only shake out a small amount of glitter at a time.  Two important things to think about when using glitter with kids.Glitter Shamrock Sun-catchers ~ Easy St Patricks day craft for ToddlersSet your glittered shamrock aside to dry overnight.  Once the glue is dry, peel it from the wax paper and hang it on a string in your window.
Glitter Shamrock Sun-catchers ~ Easy St Patricks day craft for ToddlersI love how sparkly these little shamrocks look hanging in the window.  This project was deemed prefect from my day care kiddos.  Squeezing glue and shaking glitter it is winning combination in their books:)
