Hi Housing a Forest readers! My name is Vicky and I am so excited to be here and share a fun art activity I did recently with my kids. I am a mom of three – 4 year old twins and a 3 year old, and this activity was perfect for them and would work with kids who are a lot older as well. I blog at Mess For Less where I share kids activities, crafts, learning ideas, family friendly recipes and parenting tips. Please stop by and have a look.

Tissue Paper Collage
When I was at the craft store a few weeks ago, I saw these 5×7 canvases, which seemed just the right size for little hands. I had no idea what I was going to make with them, but they came in a three pack and when you have three kids you are more likely to buy something just because it comes in a three pack. Also, I had a 50% off coupon so they were less than $2. They sat in my closet for weeks until I used some tissue paper in another activity and I started thinking about tissue paper crafts we could make in the future. Then it hit me! Why not use the tissue paper on the canvas to make a collage?

You will need:
  • 5×7 canvas
  • Tissue paper in various shapes and colors
  • Scissors
  • Mix of glue and water
  • Brush and cup
Start off by cutting squares of out various colors of tissue paper. I made my squares different sizes to add interest to the finished product. Then I made my glue mixture. Mix equal parts white glue and water in a cup.

I explained to the kids how they would be placing glue on the canvas and sticking on the tissue paper squares. I wanted them to have the freedom to make their collage however they wanted, so I didn’t give them much more instructions than that. I was curious to see what they would come up with.

Tissue Paper Collage
They certainly has different techniques. One daughter spread a layer of glue over the entire canvas and then proceeded to stick on her squares while another daughter glued one square on at a time.

And my third daughter worked hard not to overlap her squares.
Tissue Paper Collage
This was great fine motor practice for my youngest as she carefully lifted each square and placed it exactly where she wanted it on the canvas.

I didn’t know how my three year old would do with this activity, but she was very intent on filling up her entire canvas with squares. She talked about how she used big squares on top and little squares on the bottom.

When the kids were finished the canvases looked like this.

When they were dry, I spread a thin layer of the glue mixture over the top of the tissue paper covered canvas. If you have older kids then they can do this step themselves, but little kids might have a hard time making a thin layer and not tearing the tissue paper. Let this dry overnight.

Now they are ready for framing! I am very pleased with how these came out and the kids are so proud to see their artwork displayed in frames. It really made them feel like artists. Next time you get some tissue paper with a present, save it for some fun tissue paper crafts.

Here are a few of my favorite posts from Mess for Less:

Rainbow Q-Tip Painting

My day care kiddos love painting and doing projects.  As soon as they walk in the door they are asking what project they get to do.  It makes my heart melt.  I love when kids excited about creating.  Today I set up a simple painting activity.  Instead of using paint brushes, I set out Q-Tips (cotton buds) for the kids to paint with.  They loved this simple Rainbow Q-Tip Painting project.

Painting Q-Tip Rainbows

Materials:

  • Liquid Water Colors or watered down liquid food coloring
  • Q-Tips (Cotton Buds)
  • White Paper

Painting Q-Tip Rainbows. The kids loved dipping their Q-Tips in the liquid watercolor and sliding it across the paper.  I added a Q-Tip to each of the colors to simple help keep the colors bright, and encouraged the kids to d their mixing on the paper.

I love this little elbow propped on their paper in pure concentration:)

Painting Q-Tip RainbowsSwitching up what you offer your kids to paint with is a great way to keep things fun and exciting.  If you are looking for more interesting ways to paint with your kids you won’t want to miss my Painting without Brushes Pinterest board.

I also encouraged the kids to make puddles of water colors on their paper.  They loved watching the colors pool and mix into new colors.  While their painting was still wet, the kids sprinkled it with salt.  Salt reacts with the watercolor as it dries and creates a beautiful texture.  Make sure to let your painting completely dry before brushing off the salt.

Weekly Kids Co-op

Pipe Cleaner Challenge

We spent a wonderful weekend at the cabin with some special friends.  It was so nice to spend time together with no time constraints.  While we were there, I presented all the kids with a simple Pipe Cleaner Challenge.  My kiddos are like me and always up for a challenge.  Everyone quickly divided into 3 teams. Tinfoil and Pipe Cleaner Challenge that your kids will love! I handed each of the teams 2 basic items…the same amount of tin foil and pipe cleaners.  Their only instructions were to come up with something creative, and work together.  I love challenges that evoke both thinking and working together.  I told them to get creative with their minimal supplies and sent them off to separate rooms.

Crafts don’t need to be extravagant or even use every supply in our cupboard.  I can easily get caught up with Pinterest and all the beautiful crafts that I forget that kids have wonderful imaginations and we need to be fostering their creativity.  By limiting what supplies are available and presenting this activity as a challenge, it got kids thinking in a new way.  I love that!

Tinfoil is a fun creative tool for kids to play with.  Encourage them to twist it, mold it and shape it into anything they want.  You may be surprised at how sculptable it is.  With the addition of Pipe Cleaners your kids are set to build anything they can dream up!

Tinfoil and Pipe Cleaner Challenge that your kids will love!

This beautiful castle was created from our youngest team.  I love that the King and Queen are sitting on their thrones in front of the entrance.  This group felt a little rushed, but I love the results!

Nothing like a pretty spring flower garden to cheer you up:)  The flowers are adorable  but I think my favorite is the bug.  The perfect garden for the King and Queen to take a stroll through.

Tinfoil and Pipe Cleaner Challenge that your kids will love!

It can be hard to find crafts that suit a wide range of interests.  However, by presenting this activity as a challenge and not a craft, encouraged even the non-crafty kiddos to have fun.  Our 10 year old boys even got into it, and that is saying something:) All they needed was a little imagination.  Now the the King and Queens castle will be protected with a quiver full of arrows and bows!  Nice work boys!

Tinfoil and Pipe Cleaner Challenge that your kids will love!

Have you ever presented your kids with a crafting challenge?  I would love to hear your experience.  This will be something that we will be trying again really soon!

Disclaimer: Not too long ago we received a delightful package from CraftProjectIdeas.com.  It was packed full of craft supplies. One of the things we received was a ginormous package of Fuzzy Sticks or pipe cleaners.  They were perfect for this challenge.
