Simple Finger Knitting Project

Finger Knitting ~ A Simple Kids Craft for Valentines Day

Finger knitting is so easy, plus no tools needed.  All you need is your fingers and some yarn.  Making it perfect for bringing to restaurants, taking along on road trips, or perfect quiet time activity.  My kids LOVE finger knitting.

How to Finger Knit in a few easy steps:

{or watch the video that taught my kids, it is seriously easy to follow!}

  • To begin…hold the yarn between your thumb and index finger (in your non-dominant hand). The tail of the yarn should lay across the back of your hand, and your palm should be facing you.
  • Then simply weave the yarn back and forth through your fingers. Go behind your middle finger, in-front of your ring finger, and behind your pinky.
  • Loop around and weave your way back to your index finger.
  • Repeat above 2 steps so you have 2 loops on each finger.
  • Now your ready to start knitting.  Begin by Flipping the bottom loops over the top loops. Make sure to leave the top loop on your finger.  That bottom loop of yarn should now be on the back of your pinky.
  • Now your ready to weave the yarn around your fingers again.  When your done weaving, you should once again have two loops on each finger.
  • Flip the bottom loops up over the top loops again.
  • Continue this process until you have a long “rope”.

Finishing your Finger Knitting:

  • Once your rope is your desired length, stop knitting.  You should have one loop on each finger.
  • Take the loop from your pinky, and stack it on your ring finger.  Flip the bottom loop over your ring finger.
  • Next, move the loop from your ring finger to your middle finger. Again, Flip the bottom loop over your middle finger.
  • Stack the loop from your middle finger to your index finger. Pull up the bottom loop again. You now only one loop on your index finger.
  • Cut your “working” yarn a few inches away from the loop.
  • Slip the loop off your index finger and slip and pull the tail through the loop.
  • Now your ready to get creative with your knitting.

Materials Needed:

  • Old window or frame
  • Burlap
  • A Length of Finger Knitting
  • Hot or Cold Glue Gun
  • Tape

The kids were super excited to start their simple project.  So we simply attached the burlap to a distressed window with tape.  Maybe not the most permanent solution, but it totally worked for us.

My youngest girl is learning how to write in cursive.  This project was a fun challenge for her.  She wrote the words “love” in finger knitting before tacking it down with the glue gun. Easy Peasy!

I seriously LOVE the combination of burlap, finger knitting and a distressed window.  It turned out amazing, plus totally quick and inexpensive.  Love that!

I have only crocheted, but this seems really easy. I used to teach at an elementary school. You have some really creative ideas here that teachers could use in their classroom. I will definitely try this finger knitting project!
