Silver Egg Experiment

How to make a Siver Egg ~ Science Experiment

This simple experiment shows how to turn a regular egg into a silver egg!  Anyone else love the look of mercury glass?  That’s what these little eggs resemble.  Beautiful!

I’m excited to be teaming up with my good friend Nathan from Minnesota Cold for a fun series all about eggs.  We are sharing “egg-citing” experiments and unique ways to color eggs.  No traditional egg dye here!

We were amazed with our Golden Egg, and can’t wait to share how to make a silver egg.

Materials needed:

  • Raw Egg
  • Candle
  • Lighter
  • Container full of water ~ We used a mason jar.
  • Tongs ~ Optional, but we found them helpful

Using a candle, hold an egg near the flame to cover it with soot. Be careful not to burn your fingers.  You will want your egg to be completely black and covered with soot.

Use tongs to help hold the egg so the soot does not rub off on your fingers.

Once the egg has a nice black sooty coating, gently immerse it into your jar of water.  Ready to be amazed.  The egg will turn immediately silver, and look like mercury glass!!!

The black egg has turned into a silver egg when observed though water.

Silver eggs are pretty sweet, but who want silver when you can have gold?  Did you know you can actually make a golden egg?!?  We don’t own a magical goose, but we will show you how to amaze your friends with this simple golden egg experiment.
