Outdoor Tic Tac Toe

We have been spending our summer outside playing in our backyard and exploring new parks. We combined our love for outdoors and playing board games into one simple and fun activity. Check out our latest wood chip game…Outdoor Tic Tac Toe.

You are never to young or old to play Tic Tac Toe. My kids enjoy playing X’s and O’s since they were little and it is still one of their go to games. By creating a tactile outdoor version of this classic game, the kids have renewed interest in playing this classic game.

Outdoor Tic Tac Toe:

Sidewalk Chalk in a variety of colors
Small Sticks ~ to create the Tic Tac Toe grid
10-12 wood chips ~ similar sizes for the game pieces

This game is perfect for playing in our backyard, at the park or while camping. One of my favorite things is that in order play, the kids need to go on a simple outdoor adventure to gather all the playing pieces…a nature walk.

Once the kids gather all the materials, color the game pieces with chalk.

I love how the color of the chalk plays with the texture of the wood.

Simple Outdoor Checkers Game

We have been having so much fun playing outside this summer and enjoying lots of family time. The kids had a blast creating simple Wood Chip Chalk Art (Housing A Forest guest post on Kids’ Play Space). They wanted to play a board game outside and quickly created their own Simple Outdoor Checkers Game. Check out our sidewalk chalk version of the classic game Checkers!

Simple Outdoor Checkers Game:

Hard Flat Surface ~ a sidewalk works great!
Sidewalk Chalk ~ you will need at least 3 different colors
24 Wood Chips ~ in similar sizes

Start by creating a checkerboard with chalk on the sidewalk. The grid should be 8 squares by 8 squares, the same as a typical checker board.

Gather and color your wood chips with chalk. These will be your game pieces.

The kids loved this simple outdoor version of the classic Checkers Game. It is so easy to set up and it is perfect for playing just about anywhere.

Stacked 2 colored wood chips on top of each other to create a “King”.

The best part is you can create a large-scale version of the classic game anywhere, and make sure to get creative with the game pieces. I can’t wait to hear where you set up your next checkers game.

How to Repair a Cracked Water Table

I was so excited when I picked up a free water table. However, there was a crack in the bottom of it where the water could run through. Bummer! Not to be deterred from my wonderful treasure, I brought it home anyway. I had plans of using it with sand. However, my hubby informed me that it could be fixed really easily. Here’s to handy hubbies ~ a simple tutorial on How To Repair A Cracked Water Table.

You will want your repair to be as seamless as possible, so push the cracked area back flush with the rest of the plastic. Once everything is flush, make sure to clean both sides of the water table to ensure a good seal.

Materials you will need:

Tube of Clear Roof Caulking ~ used to seal roofing leaks. You can find it at your local hardware store.
Caulking Gun
Clear Plastic Container from our Recycle Bin ~ we used a strawberry container, but any clear plastic would work.

Flip the water table upside down. You will be placing the patch on the underside of the table. Next, squeeze a liberal amount of clear roofing sealant onto the backside of the water table.

Next cut a piece of hard plastic that is just larger than the crack. Apply more clear caulk to the plastic piece (it is white when it first comes out of the tube, but it dries clear). The key to this seal working is lots of adhesive. Remember you are placing the patch on the underside of the table.

Rub the plastic to remove any air bubbles, this will also spread the caulk out in an even layer right to the edges of the plastic. You don’t want any air bubbles under the patch.

Use your finger to apply a thin layer of caulk over the edge of the plastic as well. Sealing right to the water table. We also flipped the table back over and ran a thin bead of caulk over the crack. Set the table aside for about a day to allow for the caulk to dry and cure. It will be clear once everything is dry.
