Microwave An Egg – Science Experiment for Kids
Ever wondered what happens to an egg when its microwaved? Well wonder no more, you are about to find out. In the name of science OK curiosity, we decided to see what would happen. Honestly, I don’t think any of us were fully prepared for what happened.
I’m excited to be teaming up with my good friend Nathan from Minnesota Cold for a fun series all about eggs. We are sharing “egg-citing” experiments and unique ways to color eggs. No traditional egg dye here!
Ready to see what happens to an egg when you microwave it?
Materials needed:
- Raw Egg
- Microwave
- Something to keep the egg upright ~ We used a piece of cardboard tube.
Exploding Egg Experiment:
Place the egg and cardboard tube into the microwave. Turn the microwave on, stand back and observe. (Please be careful and ask your parents before attempting)
We turned our microwave on for 10 minutes, but it only took about 30-40 seconds.
Seriously cool to watch. The kids all jumped when it exploded.
Messy, but totally worth it.

These experiments were done in collaboration with Nathan from Minnesota Cold. A few of my favorite experiments that embrace the cold include blowing frozen bubbles, sledding on a frozen towel and jumping on a frozen trampoline.
