Drawing on Road maps

Introduction to Maps and Geography ~ Drawing on Road maps

We have been all about transportation activities the last little bit.  Recently, the kids had fun making Crayon Rubbings using license plates.  When I found a box of old maps I knew we had to use them.  This simple activity is perfect way to introduce little ones to maps and geography.

The kids had so much fun with this simple activity. All you need are a few old maps, a couple highlighters or markers and a little imagination.

I spread out a number of old road maps on the table and encouraged the kids to explore.

We talked about roads and how we use them to plan trips or find where were are.  I then gave each kids a highlighter and encouraged them plan their own road trips.

The kids had fun drawing on the maps and talking about visiting friends and family.  They also traced and followed the roads on the printed maps.  It was so fun listening to the stories the kids made up about where they were going and what they were going to see on their road trip.  Totally adorable!
