Exploding Peep Geysers ~ Candy Experiment
I had no idea that Peeps are now making festive Halloween Ghosts until I found myself wandering the to the candy isle at Target.  Now that is a dangerous isle!  My kids have been wanting to try this Microwaved Peep Experiment for a while, so we decided to take it to the next level.  My kids were totally memorized watching our simple Exploding Peep Geysers. Â
Exploding Peep Geysers:
- Empty plastic bottle ~ we used a small Gatorade bottle
- 3 Peeps
- A Microwave
Squish your little peeps into the bottle.
Once the peeps were all snug in their new home, we realized that our bottle almost touched the top of the microwave. Â It would have been easier to do this step first, but oh well. Â Cut a few inches off the top of the bottle. Â You will see why this is a good idea as you scroll down.
I asked the kids what they thought was going to happen when we microwaved our little ghosts. Â They predicted that the Peeps would expand to the top of the container. Â Surprisingly, our little Peeps did more than just expand. Â Who knew they would explode right out of the bottle.Â
Place your peep filled bottle in the middle of the microwave. Â It will only take about 30 seconds before the explosion is over so be ready. Â The peeps actually fly out of the bottle. How cool is that! Â The kids loved it, although were bummed by how quickly the whole experiment was over.
This was a shot immediately after the microwave door was opened. Â The puffy, gooey mess deflated quickly as it cooled.
Just like regular Marshmallows, this sticky pile became hard as it cooled. Â Surprisingly it was not all that hard to clean up. Â Thank goodness for dishwashers.
If you kids love this experiment, then they will also love to try this simple Exploding Ivory Soap experiment. It is one of my kids favorites.  The best part is, you can make Fluffy bath tub paints once you are done.  2 projects for the price of one!

This is HILARIOUS! My boys would love exploding peeps in the microwave!
Pretty darn awesome! I’ll have to hunt down some Peeps. I love it!
This is awesome, Tammy! I’d love to try it. Now…just to find some peep ghosts here. I had no idea they existed either!
This is such fun! What a great activity!
You are brave to do this in your microwave!! I think I’d be too scared of the mess I would have to clean up! I bet your kids had a blast though. 🙂
I have used the Halloween peeps to make S’mores and the kids love it!
“Melted Ghosts”, “Melted Jack o’ Lanterns” and oh….drat, I can’t recall the last one…maybe Bats? Cats? Spiders? Whatever it is/was ~
Put a graham cracker square on a microwave safe plate, put a Peep of your choosing on top of the cracker, then put them both in the microwave. Microwave until the Peep expands/melts, (approx. 30 seconds – 1 minute – depending on your microwave. If more than one S’more, the cook time will increase a little) then top with a piece of chocolate and another graham cracker – YUM! Happy Halloween!
