Our reduced salt play dough recipe is always a hit. However, this time we decided to kick it up a notch. We have been making Kool Aid play dough for years, but this is the first time I’ve shared it with you. Your kids are going to love how it smells! (scroll down for the recipe).
I always keep packets of Kool Aid in our art cupboard. Yep, you read right. Seriously…Kool Aid is one of my favorite secret art weapons. Have you seen our Kool Aid Pumpkins, or tried our Kool Aid Easter Eggs? Both a huge hit in our house!
Kool Aid Play Dough
The kids loved how this simple play recipe smells. Grape and cherry Kool Aid created beautiful Valentine’s color and smelled great. I also love that it is so inexpensive.
Kool Aid Play Dough Recipe:
This recipe is super easy to make, and smells AMAZING! Plus it feels very similar to store bought Play Doh.
- 1 cup Flour
- 1/4 cup Salt
- 2 tsp Cream Of Tartar
- 1 cup Water
- 1 1/2 or 2 TBSP Vegetable Oil ~ I have used both measurements successfully and love how soft it makes the dough feel.
- Packet of Kool Aid ~ We used Cherry for the 1st batch & Grape for the 2nd.
- Glitter ~ Optional, but always fun!
Easy Play Dough Instructions:
- Mix ingredients together in a sauce pan ~ I usually mix the dry ingredients and add the wet ingredients separately. However, you can just dump everything together and mix.
- Stir until your mixture looks like cake batter…a few lumps are fine.
- Cook over medium heat. Make sure to stir constantly.
- The mixture will thicken…continue stirring.
- Once the mixture forms one large “clump” (I’m sure that is the technical term) you are good to go. Simply remove the dough from the heat, and knead a few times by hand.
Caution…cool before little fingers play with it. It will be very hot at this point.
This recipe makes about 2 cups of Play Dough.
how are you supposed to store this and how long does it last
Jessica, I store ours in the fridge in a ziplock bag. It usually lasts about a month. Although the batch in my fridge right now I made 3 months ago and it’s still totally fine. If it starts smelling off or feels crusty then make a new batch.
